At the heart of Of Sea & Skin are Jenny and Craig. As they grow up together under the weight of small-town expectations, Jenny hides her latex fetish, an intensely personal longing that stirs both profound shame and fascination, convinced it will never be accepted by those around her.

Craig meanwhile, navigates a world that sees him one way, as a boy who should act like one, even as he already understands that his gender identity doesn’t fit into traditional norms. The story  offers space to explore his uncertainty and vulnerability in a time where words like trans or gender dysphoria aren’t part of his world yet. All he knows is that the version of himself everyone expects doesn’t feel true. At the same time, he’s in love with Jenny, though he keeps that hidden too, terrified that saying anything could break the one real connection he has. 

Of Sea & Skin lays its focus on queer self-discovery, particularly in how it embraces parts of queerness that are often sidelined, like fetishism. This comic leans into the nuanced and often painful process of claiming one’s sexual identity without shame. It affirms that it is not just who we love, but also how we feel, desire, and express ourselves. In portraying Jenny’s fetishism not as something sensationalized but as a real, human part of her identity, Of Sea & Skin connects freedom of sexual expression and emotional truth.
